This painting was inspired by my love for the Whitsunday Islands and Whitsunday Coast of tropical North Queensland, Australia. The Whitsundays are at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, alive with colour and fun, bustling with activity and marine life. In March 2017, the area was struck by Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie and suffered significant damage, so the Whitsundays had very much been on my mind at the time and I wanted to paint a piece that embodied all of the good things about this most beautiful and special part of my country.
