Mary Poppins Festival Gatakers Art Space Pop Up Artist Market

My home town of Maryborough, Queensland (Australia) was the birth place of P.L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins. Each year in July we have a huge festival to celebrate all things Mary Poppins. Set in our historical Wharf Street precinct, surrounded by our immaculately maintained heritage buildings and parklands, the atmosphere of the festival buzzes with music, performances, chimney sweeps, sidewalk chalk art, pram races, people in period costume, food, and fun.

Our premiere art exhibition venue, Gatakers Art Space, has many activities on during the day including exhibitions, displays by visiting artists, classes, and art activities for children. This year our Fraser Coast Arts Collective (of which I am a member) was asked if some of us would like to take part in the Art Space's first ever pop-up artist market. I couldn't pass up such a fabulous opportunity so I said yes and busily set to prepping everything for my marquee.

My vision was to have my marquee look like a small-scale art gallery. Prepping my setup was a huge job - building the marquee walls out of plywood, painting them white, working out how to hang the panels, curating and hanging my artworks, designing my artist information packs, making my marquee signage and labels for each of my paintings, shopping for supplies, admin work, etc. Being an artist isn’t just about making your art - there’s a whole other side that comes with it that everyday people don’t see!

I was absolutely thrilled with how my little pop-up gallery looked on the day of the Mary Poppins Festival Pop-Up Art Market. It turned out exactly how I had planned and it was certainly worth all of the effort it took to set it up. Thank you to everyone who visited me at the festival, who took an information pack, asked me questions about my work, and gave such positive feedback on my art. I'm very excited about taking my pop-up art gallery to other markets in the future.
